When I was a young thrill-seeker, SHROOMING meant something very different to me than what it means today.
Enter PERFORMANCE MUSHROOMS by Laird Superfood. Laird Superfood was founded by professional surfer Laird Hamilton. Laird started modifying his morning coffee before many of us hopped on to this health craze. He started jacking up his java to help increase his performance on the waves. Not only did his coffee taste amazing, it kept him full and energized for hours. Laird started sharing his “special coffee” with friends and family and eventually the brand that is “Laird Superfood” was born.
I started experimenting with functional mushrooms a few years ago after reading a few articles and seeing names like CHAGA and LION’S MANE pop up in nutrition blogs. So I of course started to try a little in my coffee, added a scoop to my smoothie, a capsule here, a tincture there and now functional mushrooms have made their way into my weekly regimen.ce
There a handful of players in this game, “Lion’s Mane” for mental clarity or to quell anxiety, “Chaga” is an antioxidant powerhouse, and proficient in fighting free radicals and inflammation. “Shiitake” is now to be great for boosting the immune system and particularly good for the heart and circulation. “Turkey Tail” contains a compound called PSK, which stimulates the immune system. PSK is so effective that it’s an approved anticancer prescription drug in Japan. “Cordyceps” has been show to improve athletic performance and help speed up recovery from intense workouts. “Resihi” has unique calming properties and has been shown to help ease depression.
There are also many good brands to choose from: There’s Laird Superfood, of course, then there’s OM, a California based company. They grow all of their organic mushrooms in Carlsbad, just north of San Diego. The founder of Four Sigmatic grew up in Finland and they source our ingredients from locations around the world. They make a really good plant-based protein powder with a big dose of functional mushrooms. More and more established wellness brands are launching their own mushroom products. So the mushroom movement has really grown over the past few years. Although the use of certain mushrooms for their medicinal properties has been a part of Eastern medicine for centuries.
So back to Performance Mushrooms by Laird, this is a powder with a very “earthy” taste and its packed with a really solid dose of high quality, effective, organic mushroom extracts. When I add it to my protein powder almond milk drink, I can barely taste it. When I add it to coffee, I have to admit I need a little creamer or a sweetener to improve the taste, but it’s worth it.
That being said, I use Performance Mushrooms by Laird Superfood mostly because of the amount of mushrooms you get per serving. You’ll be hard pressed to find another product that serves up as much mushroom power as you’ll get in this little pouch. 500 mg each of Chaga, Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps and Maitake is pretty the best I’ve come across. More bang for my buck has been the deal maker for me.
So that’s it. Give it a try. Do your own research. Good luck.
